Michelle Mengeling, PhD, MS
Dr. Mengeling is an Investigator with the Center for Access & Delivery Research and Evaluation (CADRE) and the VA Office of Rural Health (ORH), Veterans Rural Health Resource Center-Iowa City (VRHRC-IC), as well as an Assistant Professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine.
Dr. Mengeling’s methodologic expertise includes health services research, survey development, measurement, and statistics. Her primary research focuses on improving health care access for Veterans by investigating relationships among Veterans’ experiences (lifetime and military), healthcare needs, and barriers to health care (e.g., network adequacy). Dr. Mengeling is also interested in health equity and identifying whether there are differences between men and women Veterans, rural and urban contexts, and racial/ethnic subpopulations.
• A lead of the Community Care Research Evaluation & Knowledge (CREEK) center, which serves as a policy and data expertise hub and works to foster collaboration and knowledge diffusion about use of VA-direct care and VA-purchased care (Community Care Research Evaluation & Knowledge (CREEK) Center)
• Co-Director of the VA OAA Advanced Fellowship in Health Services Research and Development (https://www.cadre.research.va.gov/ICVA_OAA_info.asp)
• Multiple PI on the recently awarded Charleston, Providence, and Iowa City Evidence-Based Policy Evaluation Center (CPIC)
• Project Lead on the ORH-funded study Rural Native American Women Veterans’ use of VHA under the MISSION Act
